Hurricane Preparedness Checklist for Your Home

From June 1 to November 30 hurricane preparedness should be on the forefront of everyone’s mind in the Gulf of Mexico and along the East Coast.  With all the rain we’ve seen already this year, it is quite evident hurricane season is in full force.

It is never too early to prepare for a hurricane and having a plan will be a game changer when the threat of a hurricane exists. Last year we talked about the 5 key elements of hurricane prep which included the hurricane safety checklist prepared by the American Red Cross, Charleston evacuation zones as well as basic tips on how to safeguard your personal life and home.

This year we’re delving deeper on those safeguards and providing a hurricane preparedness checklist for your home:

Hurricane Preparedness Checklist for Your Home

  1. Secure &/or stow away outdoor furniture, bird feeders, lawn decorations, hoses, and potential projectiles.
  2. Trim and prune dying hedges, tree limbs, &/or large bushes.
  3. Install hurricane shutters &/or plywood over windows or openings and tape any exposed glass.
  4. Lower satellite dishes and antennas.
  5. Repair and seal any damaged shingles on roof.
  6. Seal any holes from cables or electrical wires.
  7. Insert wedges in sliding glass doors.
  8. Lockdown and secure garage and patio doors.
  9. If you have a pool: turn off power to pump motors, lighting, chlorinators, and heaters, add extra chlorine, and do not drain or cover.
  10. Bring pets indoors.
  1. Read your homeowner’s insurance policy and ensure you have the proper coverage for damage inflicted by the storm. Call your provider to discuss adding wind, hail, rain, and flood coverage if you don’t already have it.
  2. Take pictures of each and every room, closet, bathroom, nook and cranny as well as inside of cabinets, drawers, & the fridge/freezers for any home insurance claims you may need in the aftermath.
  3. Pack your hurricane kit and store all valuables and imperative documents in a waterproof container or safe.
  4. Put plastic bags over electronics and appliances, unplug lamps, etc. and store them as high as you can get them in closets.
  5. Move furniture away from exposed windows and doors.
  6. Make sure each car has a full tank of gas and park against your garage doors.
  7. Fill each sink and bathtub with water in case service is interrupted.
  8. Set refrigerator/freezers to the coolest settings.
  9. Lock all windows & doors, close blinds, and drop drapes.
  10. Turn off the main gas valve and electricity.
