Highway 41 Widening
The Highway 41 corridor is one of the most popular places for Mount Pleasant home buyers. Neighborhoods like Park West, Dunes West, Rivertowne and Planters Pointe attract buyers with their manicured lawns and great amenities. The downside to popularity is the inevitable traffics that follows. Frustrated residents are finally getting local lawmakers to listen and plans are being made to widen the 5 mile stretch from highway 17 to the Wando River.
At first glance, widening 5 miles of flat, straight roadway doesn't seem all that hard, but the current price tag is now approaching $100 million. The reasons for this include a lot of wetlands that need to be permitted and filled, the need to acquire land from adjacent properties, and the fact that there are several different governments involved - town, county and state.
The good news is that Mount Pleasant mayor Linda Page and other local officials have made it a priority to have the work complete by 2020, which seems far away but is actually pretty ambitious. They're even trying to pass a half-cent county sales tax to fund this and similar projects. At Gatehouse Realty, we'll keep up with the progress, as it affects a lot of our clients in this part of town.
