10 Spring Cleaning Steps Most People Miss Before Listing Their Home

Most people have a spring cleaning regime they follow through and through. Spring cleaning chores like vacuuming under the couch cushions, wiping down the baseboards, and even cleaning out the gutters.

Here are 10 spring cleaning steps most people miss writing down on their lists but need to include...especially if planning to list their homes come spring.

Before beginning to spring clean, you’ll need an arsenal of basic supplies:

  • Multi-purpose cleaner
  • Baking Soda
  • Vinegar
  • Glass cleaner
  • Dusting wand
  • Rags
  • Scrubbing utensils

10 Spring Cleaning Steps Most People Miss Before Listing Their Home

  1. Clean, wipe down and organize inside of cabinets and drawers. One of the first things potential buyers are going to do is open the cabinets and drawers. Don’t take the chance of having them see disheveled, unorganized chaos behind the open doors.
  2. Don’t just clean inside of appliances, clean behind them as well! Not all of the appliances are going to convey with the property and some buyers may actually move your refrigerator to see if theirs will fit in the space provided.
  3. Dust and wipe down the ceiling, walls, corners, light fixtures, and fans. Just like the baseboards are washed, its reciprocal should be done as well.
  4. Take special care when cleaning your windows. Don’t just clean the fingerprints from the glass, but also scrub down the sill and wipe down the tracks so the whole area is sparkling clean.
  5. Dust the blinds and wash window treatments! It’s amazing how many clients we’ve seen completely forget to dust their blinds and wash their window treatments before an open house. These two areas are huge dust collectors so make sure to give them special care when spring cleaning.
  6. Scour the house for fingerprints because they’re going to be everywhere. Walls, handrails, light switches, doorknobs, and stainless steel appliances will be littered and could all use a good wipe down.
  7. Don’t forget the dining room chairs! Food, booze, goop, and sweet tea cause a sticky mess and become a total eyesore. Take the time to wipe down those chairs, or even have them reupholstered if needed.
  8. Got grout? Get to scrubbing all that grout with a baking soda and vinegar paste. Grout gets dirty and can be a major turn off if it isn’t sparkling clean when potential buyers take a gander at your home.
  9. Showerheads need a good scrubbing too! Mineral deposits and build-up can occur on showerheads and this is definitely something a buyer will see. Give them a quick clean by attaching a freezer bag full of vinegar directly to the showerhead with a rubber band.
  10. If carpets are in the home, they must be cleaned. Whether professionally steamed or DIY-style w/ a grocery store rental, the caked-on dirt and dust tread into the carpet must be washed away.
